I have PCOS with high insulin resistance and I need to lose between 50 and 70 pounds. Is there a science-backed diet or nutrition plan/lifestyle I should follow to lose weight and keep it off? My blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels are all normal but my weight bothers me and there is so much misinformation out there.

Answer:

We have seen some very disturbing nutrition answers surface to the top of Google searches, meaning answers up or near the top have nothing to do with being correct.

We know PCOS is challenging and the good news is, we’ve seen others improve their symptoms and lose weight with proper treatment.

The recommendation for PCOS is a low Glycemic Load diet and maintaining a calorie deficit for weight loss. A primarily plant-based diet or Mediterranean diet can work well, depending on your preferences.

Here are some options to get you started.

  1. If you’re part of a gym that uses the dotFIT program, they can set you up with an account and help you create a weight loss program to give you a starting point, including an exercise plan which is also important. In the dotFIT program there are several menus such as heart healthy and vegetarian with the appropriate calories for your weight loss goal and starting weight.
  2. If you’re not part of a gym that uses dotFIT, you can find one here https://www.dotfit.com/ClubFinder.aspx
  3. If you’d like to get started with the dotFIT program now, sign up here and follow the prompts to create your program. https://www.dotfit.com/new-user-register. Once again, be sure to work with a physician or clinical dietitian as you make changes to your diet and activity level.
